One of the many features of moving Oregon State University’s e-mail infrastructure into the cloud is Microsoft’s robust anti-spam features. These features help reduce the amount of junk mail that appears in your inbox and can be tailored to your specific experience.

Filter junk email and spam in Outlook on the web

Overview of the Junk Email Filter

If you are receiving e-mail from an e-mail address that is being blocked that you feel should be allowed to reach all of campus (e.g. EmpCenter, or OSU Today notifications) please let us know. We can centrally allow certain Safe Senders for campus without you having to configure your own rules. If you would like to request an address be allowed and therefore delivered to oregonstate.edu account inboxes vs the junk folder, requests can be made here.

Junk Mail Settings

  1. The Junk Email Filter evaluates each incoming message based on several factors. These can include the time when the message was sent and the content of the message.
    1. To change the options for the Junk Email Filter, do the following:
    2. Click Home > Junk > Junk Email Options.

If you use Outlook on the Web instead of a local client you can make adjustments to your Junk E-mail settings by following the steps below.

  1. At the top of the page, select Settings Settings (looks like a gear)
  2. At the bottom of your screen click “View all Outlook settings”.

  1. Select Mail > Junk email.
  2. Look at the list under “Safe senders and domains”
  3. Enter the e-mail address or domain you want to add, and select Add.
  4. Select Save.

To edit or remove email addresses or domains from the blocked senders or safe senders list, select the item in the list and then select Edit or Remove. To empty your Junk Email folder, select Junk Email in the folder list, and then select Delete all at the top of the screen.

Junk Email Filter Lists

While the Junk Email Filter checks your incoming messages automatically, Junk Email Filter Lists let you control what is considered spam. You can add names, email addresses and domains to these lists so the filter doesn’t check messages from sources you trust, or blocks messages that arrive from specific email addresses and domains you don't know or trust.

Safe Senders list

Email addresses and domain names in the Safe Senders List are never treated as junk email, regardless of the content of the message. You can add your Contacts and other correspondents to this list. The Safe Sender limit is 1024.

Safe Recipients list

If you belong to a mailing list or a distribution list, you can add the list sender to the Safe Recipients List. Messages sent to these email addresses or domain names are never treated as junk, regardless of the content of the message.

Blocked Senders list

You can easily block messages from particular senders by adding their email addresses or domain names to the Blocked Senders List. When you add a name or email address to this list, Outlook moves any incoming message from that source to the Junk Email folder. Messages from people or domain names that appear in this list are always classified as junk, regardless of the content of the message. The blocked sender limit is 500.
