Protect your and Oregon State's data with our virtual private network.

Set up VPN

Virtual Private Networking (VPN) gives the user a secure connection to the OSU network along with an on-campus IP address. Once the connection is established, the user will be connected to the OSU network through an encrypted tunnel. Passwords and other sensitive information will be securely transmitted over the Internet and into the campus network. Only traffic to and from OSU will be secure when using VPN.

We are transitioning to a new VPN client

On September 18, 2020, we will retire the existing VPN service and users will need to access our new, more secure VPN environment, which is available now.

Set up new VPN

Begin using the new VPN through as soon as possible. While the old VPN will remain operational until September 18, it does not utilize Duo to protect you or the university. Please note that you will need to install the latest VPN client. This is also true for Mac users.

The new VPN utilizes Duo. This better secures both university data and your personal information.

Starting today, you can utilize the new VPN at We will be retiring the old VPN service on September 18. You will need to install the latest VPN client. This is also true for Mac users.

Yes, access to the VPN does require an ONID account. If you are working with an external partner or contractor, you can apply for an exception.

There is an exception request process for contractors, external partners, etc., who do not have ONIDs. If you have an ONID, you have to use the new VPN. If you are unsure of  who your IT Pro is, check out our database.

Please note, exceptions are not automatically approved, and requests without a justifiable business case will be denied.

We are upgrading our VPN for improved security by implementing Duo two-step authentication to better protect our user and university data.

Passwords are not enough. Criminals who have compromised your OSU account can commit identity fraud using your personal information; access, alter or delete personal, academic, research or institutional data; and damage the reputation of the university and cause OSU email to be blacklisted by others.

Certain online interactions require the use of VPN, such as editing a development site in Drupal. Check out this list of services that require VPN.
